After a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s for you or for someone you love, you need to consult with an Alzheimer’s planning lawyer as soon as possible. Because a person with Alzheimer’s will eventually lose the ability to make his own decisions and to provide care for himself, making advanced plans is of vital importance. A plan should be in place for the type of care an Alzheimer’s patient will receive; for how to pay for care costs; and for what the Alzheimer’s patient wants at the end of his life and after his death. Caregivers also need to look into resources that can provide appropriate help and support, as the stress Alzheimer’s places on families can be significant.
Where a person lives can have a major impact on what types of resources are available to them and whether or not they will get the support that they need. For those living in the city of Boston, they can benefit from the fact that the city has done a lot to prepare for both the fiscal impact of Alzheimer’s and for the social impact of Alzheimer’s.
The Law Offices of James A. Miller understands what is involved in Alzheimer’s planning and we take the appropriate steps necessary to help ensure you and your family are prepared after a diagnosis. Boston Recognized for Alzheimer’s Preparedness
According to PR News Wire, the Alzheimer’s Readiness Award was recently presented to both Mayor Martin J. Walsh of Boston and to the CEO of the Massachusetts and New Hampshire Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
The Mayor has spent years working to help ensure that the city of Boston is prepared to provide appropriate help and support to those who are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. In 2014, Mayor Walsh made sure Boston was the first major city within the United States to become a part of the Alzheimer’s Workplace Alliance. The Workplace Alliance was set up to offer education and support to employees who work for the city and who have someone in their family who has Alzheimer’s. It is estimated that thousands of city workers have family members with Alzheimer’s.
Mayor Walsh also founded by the Boston Alzheimer’s Initiative in 2014, and the city has since taken many concrete steps at improving the services that can be provided to all Alzheimer’s patients. For example, more than 350 first responders, including emergency medical responders (EMS) have been trained to recognize signs that someone may be an Alzheimer’s sufferer. By learning to recognize the behaviors of Alzheimer’s patients and the indicators of this condition, first responders can ensure that thy are interacting with Alzheimer’s patients in appropriate ways. It also becomes possible for first responders to provide assistance to Alzheimer’s patients in understanding the services available to them.
In addition to providing this training, Boston has also launched a Memory Cafe. This cafe is intended to serve as a safe space where Alzheimer’s patients and their care takers are able to meet in a social environment. Resources can be shared at the Memory Cafe and patients and caregivers can both interact with other families going through Alzheimer’s in order to get support.
The recognition for the efforts made by the city of Boston comes from the Alzheimer’s Readiness Project, which is an initiative of Eli Lilly and Company. Eli Lilly is focused on “inspiring action by fostering a deeper understanding of Alzheimer’s, its evolving science, and the public health crisis it poses.”
