Why Worcester is One of the Worst Places to Retire
CBS Local Boston reported on the bad news that Worcester may be a bad place to retire. Worcester was actually named the fifth worst place to retire, joining a list of other areas unfavorable to living as a retiree, including San Bernardino in California; Troy in New York; Milford in Connecticut; and Niagara Falls in New York.
The data identifying the worst places to retire comes from a comprehensive report that was published by Bankrate. The report took into account some of the key factors which affect the quality of life of senior citizens. These factors included climate; cost-of-living; walkability; cultural vitality; and a host of other factors that affect the lives of retirees.
Worcester scored poorly on many of these criteria. The cost of living was found to be high, while cultural vitality was found to be below average. The cold climate and substantial amounts of snow in Worcester can also make the area a very undesirable destination for seniors. Of all of the criteria which was considered by Bankrate in determining which locations were the best for retirees, Worcester scored well on just one: it was recognized for above-average walkabaility.
Worcester was not the only local in Massachusetts to fare poorly on the Bankrate list of best places for retirees. In fact, there are no cities in Massachusetts which can be recognized as one of the top 35 locations for retirees to live. Cambridge Massachusetts, considered to be the most attractive of cities in Massachusetts for seniors, was number 36 on the list of the best places in the country to retire. All of this means, as CBS Local indicates: “older Americans would rather be almost anywhere else in the country besides Worcester.”
