Medicaid Planning Worcester

Older woman getting her blood pressure checked; Medicaid Planning Worcester

Medicaid Planning and Worcester Assistance

Medicaid Planning in Worcester can help you stay current with the laws. Moreover, it can also help you as you plan for your later years.

As you might imagine, only those with significant financial assets will plan to self-pay for nursing homes. Those with fewer assets will qualify easily for Medicaid benefits if nursing home or assisted living care becomes necessary. Those in the “financial middle” are of particular concern. These folks may have assets; however, they do not have enough to fund long-term care averaging a total of $300,000.

Medicaid Planning in Worcester: You Have Choices

The choices this financial group of elderly adults may face can look fairly stark. You could potentially purchase long-term care insurance. Even still, premium hikes are likely. A “hybrid” life-long-term care policy could be an option, although the cost could be prohibitive. You may choose to sell your home to cover long-term care costs. However, if you need long-term care and your spouse wants to age in place, this isn’t viable.

The unfortunate truth is that there are relatively few people who can afford the cost of long-term care. Over an extended period of time, this can be costly. For this reason, Medicaid has become the primary way to pay for long-term care.

There are a variety of ways to ensure you are eligible for Medicaid benefits should the time come. These options help you protect the assets you have worked for during your lifetime. We can help assess your unique situation and offer the best way you can plan for your future. Our attorney, James A. Miller has a deep understanding of the Massachusetts Medicaid rules. He has garnered this understanding from years of helping people like you protect their assets. In doing so, these folks are also able to qualify for Medicaid, thanks to his experience.

What are the Medicaid Rules for Eligibility in the State of Massachusetts?

You probably have many questions regarding Medicaid planning and we are here to help you understand its important dynamics. In Massachusetts, we refer to Medicaid as MassHealth. It is a common source of funding for nursing homes and assisted living facilities for those who have used up their own assets to pay for care. Private health insurance policies don’t typically cover long-term care for residents. In addition to this, the government limits Medicare coverage in some ways.

According to a Mass.com news report, MassHealth pays for about 70 percent of nursing home residents in the state. An elder law attorney can help you consider your specific eligibility requirements.

MassHealth Spousal Maintenance Allowance

This comes into play when you are going into a nursing home or assisted living facility while your spouse stays in the home. If this is the case, the state will allow you to retain a larger amount of income and assets to support the “community spouse.” We refer to this as the monthly maintenance needs allowance.

The amount is dependent on the community spouse’s income. As of June 30, 2024, this amount is $2,465. Under the law, the community spouse can keep $148,260, aside from the home and a vehicle. Having more than the amount they allow requires a “spend-down” of assets until you meet the eligibility limit. Financial resources that they total can include life insurance policies with a cash value, one car, personal belongings, and your home depending on your circumstances. In addition, they also include checking and savings accounts, CDs, stocks, bonds, and retirement accounts.

When is a Nursing Home Considered Medically Necessary?

MassHealth only pays for a nursing home or assisted living facility when you meet the “nursing facility level of care.” This means you require a specific level of care that can only be provided in a nursing home. You must either be able to show that you require at least one skilled service each day (an injection, catheter care, monitoring of certain conditions, etc.) or that you have a mental or medical condition which requires significant levels of assistance with the daily tasks of life, such as getting dressed, taking a bath, or eating.
